Any idea why the boyoz would be dropping generics? IEDR putting pressure on them or someone else?

How do you know from the drop list who the previous owners were? Is there a wayback machine equivalent tool (dns caching?) for .ie domains or something im just overlooking?

Cheers Mate and all of us are still laughing at the Template Monster Spider Awards incident… Sooo Irish and hilarious to say the least. ;D

btw: I also applaud yourself and Michele’s quick uptake on a few nice generics ;P I picked up a couple gems myself..

I believe that they dropped quite a few domains recently. Not just branded domains also. Check the deleted list for more info.

I wonder if they will ever let any of their non-trademark generics go. No doubt they are reading this. Lads comon stop fooling around and just drop all! ;)

If you can buy relevant domains that are active and then redirect them to the target site I imagine you might get some value for money

I’d actually take it one step further – if the domain is a generic term I think you should be able to register it without the being called a cyber-squatter. In the case of nike.ie and reebok.ie I think there is little defence – these are quite obviously non-generic trademarked terms.

It gets a little greyer however with dictionary terms that might be trademarked for one particular category of business.

I think also that domaining should be allowed to some small extent on the .ie TLD. I certainly have a few domains which I have procured purely on the basis of the domain name itself.

Curiously there are now approaching 100k .ie domains live. There’s still no problem getting good .ie domains, but how long that will last is the interesting aspect – then we might start to see goodwill values placed on actual domains.

Thanks for commenting

This is a pretty interesting topic (well for some I guessJ) For me cyber squatting is at times a miss used phrase. I totally disagree with the purchase for future of already well known trademarks. I think these names should be handed over on request.

However I think it is perfectly fair to buy non trade marked names with the view to future development e.g. collegegigs.com

I see this as being no different to someone buying land or numerous sites for houses with a view to future to development. This to me is good old fashion capitalist speculation. I sometimes feel this is confused with cyber squating. Alternatively is cyber squating any different to the perfectly legitimate business of property flipping?

I think domaining is in its infancy and I’m interested in what you and your readers think?
