Following up from this post, I thought I'd do a poll over at IWF to see what other webmasters thought - would they miss PR, and its a surprising result so far:

I also think they should just turn it off, but then you know the whole of DP will be running around like headless chickens! lol And they will next look to Alexa, but that is way to easy to abuse!!

I agree, turn it off Google. Too many people are caught up in the confusion plus there are SEO folks out there that exploit it to sell their service.
Would the 'average' Google user really miss it?

thank god I came here, my serp rankings seem to be still in tact and my PR of 4 remains as it has been for quite a long time, even though backlinks and page code etc have been well and truely cleaned up.
But I did go to a blog I contribute on and was shocked at what I saw a PR of 5, something I have been trying to get for years. The blog is not even a year old has 91 backlinks in Google compared to my 190ish links, I was seriously freaked out. But it seems I am not alone in this confusion thank god.

My site has dropped down to PR 4, hasn't been that in years.
Also my resources page dropped from PR 5 to PR 0. I noticed redflymarketing is down from 7 to 6 now. Seems something strange is going on anyhow.

Nope - my site ranks for most of the terms I target. That's my goal, not the figure showing in a small green bar.
Negativity is toward the way Google is treating the webmaster community in general, and the SEO community in particular. At a micro level many of the Googlers are fantastically helpful, but at the macro level Google has has lost the plot IMO.
And what's the chances that youtube.com got a hand job?
Rgds
Richard

YouTube is back to PR8 and their Irish version is now PR6. They are strange examples David, just goes to show that PR is BS.
Richard : negativity , is probably due to people thinking they deserve higher PR. ;)

Well, after my site dropped to PR4 I dropped text link ads, so I guess Google are getting what they want. On the other hand, my traffic hasn't changed one bit. It's up slightly in fact!

Personally I'd rather if they just turned it off than churn out quite obviously false data.
Is it just me, or does anyone else sense a huge amount of negativity in the webmaster community toward Google?
Cheers for dropping by David,
Rgds

I have more proof of the BS PR:
This thread that I started at da point received over 400 natural links including some authority ones:
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=461494
This page got a PR3.
Another thread I started, received hardly any:
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=487451
This page got a PR6, anyone who can work that one out is an SEO god.
