I don't know, the people I've talked to who have paid for a course have not learned all that much that they couldn't have learned by reading free SEO resources on the web.
On the other hand, what I do think is helpful is spending time with an SEO consultant who actually looks at your site and gives specific feedback relative to your niche, your websites construction and link configuration (both inbound and on-site). The problem here is that this kind of consultation usually runs between $500 - $1,500, and people can't afford that.
There are, albeit rare, promotions from time-to-time from search optimization firms where they give away free consulting or free seo analysis sessions. Snatch these up when you can... And then DO WHAT THEY TELL YOU...
It's that simple.

Halfdeck has some fantastic material on there. He's always tinkering around from what I can tell.
Dmitri - I was half going to edit out your link - that site really is borderline for my liking. I've left it in as it seems to be legit.
Rgds

Thanks for the seo4fun. It's a truly nice and fun site. I guess we would all need the patience HalfDeck has for all the SEO thing.
