The entries this year were outstanding and testament to the strength of the Irish internet industry. These awards provide an important opportunity to recognise and showcase online excellence.

[Emphasis mine]

I have to say that my research begs to differ with you Mr. Magee.

  1. These awards have zero credibility.

I wonder what are the criteria these are judged on as I use RTE.ie as an example to students of poor web design. If these awards are not for design and not for quality of code (i.e. the lack of standards), what is their purpose?

Red Cardinal start your own awards, you’ve obviously spent far more time evaluating these websites than the “judges” themselves! The minimum requirement should involve use of standards and these awards should reward efficiency, SOE and design innovation. It is obvious that these criteria have been ignored.

  2. Thanks for the kind words Brian.

While I’m very flattered by your suggestion, I don’t think I would be an ideal candidate to run an awards

    Rgds

  3. :) We discussed that in the Irish Webmaster boards. We need deep pockets or decent backing.

I have to say, I think I have lost all interest in the awards. Unless I’m up for something next year ;)

Nice to see how accessible all the winners websites are. Maybe I’m just a sore loser?

  5. The Golden Spiders are a joke. Simply a night out for big business. Is anybody seriously interested in these “micky mouse” awards

  6. Does anyone find it odd that the winners are always someone that’s forked out for a ticket for the event? So it seems to work like this – pay your 100 euro entry fee and if, by arbitrary or incompetent selection, you make the shortlist then in order to win you HAVE TO fork out to attend the event too. Well that’s good. So at least we know now that it’s not actually a mark of quality.

  7. These so-called award ceremonies have nothing to do with the quality of a website, and are only based on the ‘in crowd’ of eircom customers.

I found another Irish award site the other day with is done by o2, and called the ability awards (www.theabilityawards.com).

“The O2 Ability Awards are the first Irish business awards for best practice in the employment and inclusion of people with disabilities.”

The inclusion of people with disbilities doesn’t seem to extend to producing websites that are accessible to people with disabilities.
