A question on SiteLinks Search Box +John Mueller

As per https://developers.google.com/structured-data/slsb-overview it states to use the canonical homepage for your domain.  Is there any way to set this up when you have multiple country sites beneath your main domain, e.g.

www.example.com > US site
www.example.com/uk/ > UK site

On Example.com sitesearch segments results based on the country site within which the user is searching. I realise this may not be possible since Google doesn't seem to show the sitesearch box for sub-sites under same domain?
