As if the staying safe on mobile and protecting your password items constitute changes to TOS… but they can't have users thinking this is only about generating income from your profile picture and click activity, now could they?

  1. I agree, odd that they'd even mention those items in a ToS update.

However, the actual update to the ToS is a good improvement by Google because users didn't get a choice about that before – so now they are improving (which means providing an option to limit) how Google use your photo/name/.. in other commercial contexts.

It won't happen but if every Google user updated their shared endorsements settings to limit Google's use, this would actually be a negative for Google.

  2. Google have been adding Media and advertising people – this was bound to happen.

As +Seth Godin says – Google are having their jump the shark moment

  3. At least they should pay you for it, if they use your recommendations.

  5. Erhmm: When I go to: https://plus.google.com/settings/endorsements
then the checkbox next to the setting "Based upon my activity, Google may show my name and profile photo in shared endorsements that appear in ads." is in fact not checked. I.e. I'm seeing it as opt-in (not as opt-out).
Anyone seeing a different default setting with their account?

  7. +Guido Vanhaleweyk All the Google services are free for you; what did you expect. You are NOT the customer; the advertising industry is.
The simplest solution would be not to "+1" any pages, products and completely ignore google social network.

  8. +Daniel Woydig Yes, the two pigs in the pigsty.

You got this wrong: its ok to advertise to me, its not ok to use me to advertise.

You can't use Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman to advertise your business without their permission (and huge $$$'s)
