Why does Yahoo rank #1 for ‘seo ireland’ on Google?

It’s funny how arch rivals sometimes sweet up to each other. Well OK, it seems a lot more likely that there is a problem with Google’s index:

Google loves Yahoo

You just got to love those sponsored listings that guarantee positions in 5 days or less for $399. I wonder how they would get on optimising my nice new hotel site for the keyphrase ‘hotels’!

  1. That’s a strange one alright, the yahoo page does not contain the word ‘seo’ anywhere, it’s source code is extremely messy with css and a good bit of js in there.

It has a pr 8 though, could this be the reason???

  2. Really cant say Dave. I thought it was very odd and have to conclude that it is down to bad data.

It will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

  4. Funny, now uk.yahoo.com/ ranks #14 for ‘search engine optimisation ireland’ on google.com. Very strange. The Google SERPs are definitely getting shuffled about the last few days. Oh, and not to mention aol.com being #65???

  5. Richard I know this is a very old post but I was just looking at those results thinking why Google is such a mess. I mean, you posted this back in Aug 2006 but yet Jan 2007 it remains the same.

Also, take a dig through some of the sites ranking for SEO Ireland, do you think they should be in the top 21 for that term?

I smell some link love coming your way ;-)

  6. Hi Gavin

Yeah, this is an old one. Funny because I actually hope to put up a few hotel sites ;-)

There are some very odd sites ranking for SEO-related terms. But Google really doesn’t care unless an issue disrupts the experience of a whole lot of people. The fact that it is in the SEO niche makes it even more unlikely that Google cares. At best Google tolerates SEOs and nothing more.

  7. I was thinking it was because it was the SEO niche. Seems MSN & Yahoo have got the better results on this one, hey even MSN ranks me in at #9..respect to Bill Gates and down with Mickey Cutts :-)
