2 things that have been in my mind recently:

Internet Marketing Ireland

1. Google may be releasing algo updates which don't impact all sites at once. Online chatter seems to indicate changes happening on various dates in May, and it strikes me that no one is able to tie this down. If I wanted to screw with SEOs one of the things I'd change was updates which impact everyone at once.

2. Something else tells me that WHOIS might be something Google will use to identify Internet Marketers, as most have multiple domains. In years past Google's battle was with Affiliates. Now that they've conquered that patch of the web it's fairly obvious that Internet Marketers are the latest target. I don't see the current "war" as being with SEOs at all. I'd love to know if sites affected in May updates belonged to common WHOIS IDs?

Just some things that came to mind while walking off my dinner :)

  1. I agree with your 1st point, there does seem to be a release on some sites and not others. I have been answering a lot of "help unnatural link warning" messages.

Feck …. WHOIS id, never thought of that

  2. So you're seeing lots of manual penalties? I'm seeing lots of sites losing 2-digit % traffic since May 1. Some sites hit on May 1, others around May 8. The ones I see don't appear to be manual penalties. I don't think it's Penguin or Panda, and I'm wondering what else they might hit at?

  3. Pretty hard to tell concidering the massive variables without any pattern.

I have seen a handful of traffic related posts particularly the "big traffic drop warning message" , but as of the 16th i have been seeing a jump in unnatural link messages

  4. You're in luck, Tim Capper re: the unnatural links warning messages. Apparently Google intends to create what they call a ""Disavow Links Tool". Stay tuned. :)

  5. PMSL Jim, you crack me up, but they may be getting the message

  6. I'm thinking of composing a two-word reconsideration request ending in "you". It won't do me any good but at least they'll get a message.
